Memento Mari "Welcome to Europe" Sound & Visual Installation and Concert/Performance @ Lampedusa-in-Festival VI Edizione, 25th - 30th September 2014

“Welcome to Europe”, Memento Mari Quartet

Launched in 2011 as reaction / reflection to the arrival of thousands of refugees and migrants from North Africa, the network of artists and cultural operators Memento Mari intervenes to this year Lampedusa in Festival with “Welcome to Europe”, a concert-performance in Piazza Castello on 29th September, after the movies, and a sound and visual installation (“Welcome to Europe / RE-wind”) @ Area Marina Protetta all along the festival.

MEMENTO MARI goes on stage – with the support of the historical improvised music collective IN/audible (Brussels, 1982) – with a quartet coming from Belgium and France:

Marco Loprieno: bass clarinet, sopranino sax, elettronics
Patrizia Lugo: voice, megaphone, objects
Guy Strale: bendir, gamelan, objects
Christian Vasseur: lute, voice, objects

“Welcome to Europe” starts from people and not from borders. In this way it underlines the inadequate political response to the tragedy of the migrants and refugees crossing the Mediterranean and the other borders of the European Union. Performance and installation are intended to suggest the positive role that migrations can play in the development of a new Europe more based on solidarity and finally able to come out from its serious social and economic crisis.
